Events

We are regular vendors at the Athens Farmers Market,  which was recently named one of the 10 best farmers markets in the United States by Audubon Magazine.  The market is open year-round, running from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Wednesdays (no Wednesday market from Christmas until early April).  It is located at the Market on State, East State St. in Athens, Ohio.

2nd Annual Summer Solstice Spicebush Celebration

Dairy Barn Arts Center, 8000 Dairy Lane, Athens, Ohio

$5.00 for adults, free for kids 12 & under

 

Last year we teamed up with Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery for the first ever spicebush celebration.  We’re partnering with the Dairy Barn this summer to expand into a family-friendly event with more workshops, music and other activities.  Check it out if you're in town for Ohio Brew Week!

Plant a few spicebush shrubs in the yard at the Dairy Barn Arts Center.

3:30 pm 
Spicebush Cook-off
This is an open cook-off featuring fresh or dried spicewood or dried spicebush berries.  Bring at least three samples for the judges to try or more for the crowd to sample if you’d like.  Judges are Eric LeMay, Assistant Professor, Ohio University English Department; Michelle Wasserman of Casa Nueva Restaurant;  and Natalie Woodroofe of the 30-Mile Meal project.  Prizes will be awarded for the top three spicebush delicacies.  Please bring a recipe card for your entry.

For the kids: Solid Ground Farm/Rising Appalachian Warriors will have outdoor activities including challenge initiatives and mini obstacle course, sword making and boffing battles, field games and contests, martial arts and parkour, water balloons, arts and crafts, music and more.  There will also be a bounce house from Athens Inflatables, plus volleyball, cornhole, and other games throughout the day.  12 noon – 8 pm

Balloon fun:  Patty Mitchell and Robert Lockheed of Collaborative Arts will be on site from 5 -  6 pm with balloons to twist and turn into fun hats and more.

Enjoy original craft beers from Jackie O’s (Golden Spice Ale featuring the dried spicebush leaves and twigs) and and Buckeye Brewing Company (a Belgian-style Witbier (Wheat) brewed with lemon peel and spicebush berries ).
